Women in Cybersecurity: A Growing Opportunity?
As the world becomes more reliant on technology, the importance of cybersecurity has never been more apparent. In the fast-evolving field of cybersecurity, the need for diverse and talented professionals has never been greater. Women in cybersecurity are making significant strides, removing barriers and leaving their mark in this dynamic field. In fact, according to a recent study by the National Security Agency, women now make up over 25 percent of the cybersecurity workforce.
But the increasing number of cyberattacks presents a growing shortage of highly qualified professionals, presenting room for growth for women in technology. At the Sever Institute at Washington University in St. Louis, we are committed to empowering women to excel in cybersecurity and lead the way in securing our digital world.
The Importance of Women in Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity is a complex and ever-evolving field, requiring constant attention to new and emerging threats. To stay ahead of the curve, organizations must intentionally seek out a diverse workforce to include a variety of skills, viewpoints and work histories. Women in cybersecurity play an essential role, bringing a broad range of perspectives and innovative approaches to safeguarding digital assets.
Challenges for women in tech
While the increase of women in cybersecurity warrants celebration, the low representation of women in tech makes it difficult for young women to picture themselves joining the field. The domino effect this creates in the industry includes low enrollment in cybersecurity programs, a shortage of peer-to-peer mentoring opportunities and insufficient availability for women in tech leadership roles.
However, women in cybersecurity continue to make significant contributions to the industry as they seize new opportunities to make a difference.

Resources for women in cybersecurity
There are several resources available for women in tech, including organizations that provide support and mentorship, as well as online courses and professional development:
- Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS): WiCyS is a nonprofit organization that provides support and resources for women in cybersecurity. WiCyS offers a variety of programs and events, including conferences, workshops and mentorship programs.
- Anita Borg Institute: The Anita Borg Institute is a nonprofit organization working to advance women in technology. The Anita Borg Institute offers multiple programs and resources, including scholarships, fellowships and leadership development programs.
- Women of Security (WoSEC): WoSEC is a community of women in cybersecurity providing support and encouragement to other women in the field. WoSEC chapters have no membership fees, and meet in cities around the world to network, provide professional development and other social gatherings.
